A Rec and a Problem

(Work's still crazy. I'm stealing 5 minutes. Spaced out over 2 hours.)

1) [livejournal.com profile] strangerian has written some splendid Stargate SG-1 stories and is getting her Hobbit tales back up, here. If I had all day I couldn't write a sufficient rec for her splendid stories, and I don't have all day, so I'll just say "yay!" and "read them, you'll like them".

2) I have conducted an epistolary romance with Torchwood this summer, and have read everything about the show I can get my hands on except fanfic. (I want to see the show before I read the fic.) Unfortunately, despite reports, it doesn't seem to be showing on the SciFi channel but on BBC America, which latter we can't get in my household (long story). And my inbox can't handle emailed files of that size. So, what do people recommend?

(The timing of this means I'm likely going to enter the fandom with a big wave of USAian fans, likely to the dismay of British fans watching all these American parvenus show up. I feel bad to be part of that, but oh well. All I can do is try to behave as well as possible, I guess.)

I can burn the .avis to DVD post to you?

I should warn you, though, that Torchwood is not good. I adore it madly and it does have moments of joy but it's really not an objectively good show. Also, the Captain Jack in Torchwood is not the Captain Jack in Doctor Who.

I can upload them to mediafire for you, if your bandwidth can handle it?

Speaking as one British fan, I'm just happy you may be joining us.

You do see bits of Doctor Who Captain Jack, but yes, not consistent.

On the plus side, Tosh! She's so competent! And when situations go bad she reacts by getting *better* and focussing on dealing with it all.

I've got .avi's and a DVD burner. Just ask...

[identity profile] strangerian.livejournal.com 2007-09-08 02:07 am (UTC)(link)
Sadly, this is true, or mostly true. I keep watching the show and wanting to fast-forward, but stopping and playing some bit over and over. It's... incoherent, but it has a Concept. I keep waiting for something to come out of the Rift or go into it, and sometimes things do, but they don't add up to anything. The last episodes are hella dramatic, but they come even more out of left field than the rest of it.

Oh noes! Is this going to be like real life, only with prettier people? I want it to have an arc, maybe not a single novelistic plot, but at least something related to something.

*blush* Thank you, a lot. I think I shouldn't ask you to send them across the pond unless it's *really* necessaary, though.

I adore it madly and it does have moments of joy but it's really not an objectively good show. Also, the Captain Jack in Torchwood is not the Captain Jack in Doctor Who.

Heh, I used to write fanfic about Star Trek: Voyager, I seem to have a moderate tolerance for shows that are not so good. And I think I like the Changed Jack, at least what litttle I've seen.

[identity profile] rubynye.livejournal.com 2007-09-09 04:40 pm (UTC)(link)
It can't, alas. But thank you, very much. :)

[identity profile] rubynye.livejournal.com 2007-09-09 04:42 pm (UTC)(link)
*blush* Thank you, then. I was just... reading not a few posts about Ugly Americanisms recently, and feeling bad about contributing to that.

*gets down on knees*

O wondrous doctor with anime hair, may I please have a set of Torchwood DVDs? And what sorts of dinner and baked goods would you like in exchange?

You've got it! You don't have to make me dinner, though I certainly wouldn't object (and will remind you that you're invited for Thanksgiving). Though if (and only if) you felt moved to a Jack/Ianto or Gwen/Rhys snippet after watching, I'd be utter delighted.

It's burned, with some extra goodies. How shall I get it to you?

[identity profile] rubynye.livejournal.com 2007-09-14 12:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, my *word*, how did I miss this till today?

You are awesome for putting up with me, and I will pop by your house and say hi and hug you and pick it up sometime early next week; details to follow in email.

*hugs you gratefully*

*squee* at the thought of you writing some Torchwoood, if it grabs you right. *squee* anyway at the hope you'll like the show just to look at.

*warning* that ep #6 is gross, in case you don't feel like coping with too much blood and whatnot. (Most episodes have some usefully dramatic blood, but I think #6 overdoes it.) *not a warning* that most episodes have snogging, and considering the actors, even a lot more snoggin wouldn't be overdoing it.

I'm told that season 2 will have Martha, and I'm less laid back than usual about seeing everything late.
