First Lines Meme

So, there are a thousand reasons I shouldn't do this iteration of this meme (which I first saw on my f-list in glossing's journal), including the stack of work on my desk, the fact that I still haven't replied to all the lovely comments people gave me Monday, and the fact that I can't promise to do this for everyone.

But, I like this meme. So. Below the cut are first lines from selected stories from the past year. My selection criteria were that the stories have titles, and that they be longer than a drabble. (I left out a couple, for various reasons, but most of those that fit these criteria are there.) If you'd like, pick one and write a drabble or ficlet based on it, and please post it in the comments so I'll be sure to see it.

(DC Comics) "Huh. You're my contact?" ("Star and Shine")
