Two LOTR drabbles, G/PG

For the [livejournal.com profile] tolkien_weekly 'Bounty' challenge. Because I'm contrary and it's springtime, respectively.

Title: Never Lack
Fandom: LOTR
Characters: Unnamed Ruffian Dude
Rating: PG-something?
Disclaimer: Middle Earth is the Professor's, and the fullness thereof.

Men may die of lack, easily and painfully as by fire or sword. So I learned when the Straw-heads burned my father's farm; haughty Gondorians judged me a thief, bound me chained and ill-fed in darkness. My best choice among evils was thralldom to Isengard, gaining sunlight and shelter for freedom lost.

Now, sent to the North, I've traded handsomely indeed. The air's sweet, the food plentiful, the Shirelings plump and easily chivvied, the fair ones prettier yet in their fear. Gathering goods and hushing backtalk are easy pleasant tasks, and settled here I'll never lack for all I'd ever desire.

Title: Past All Expectation
Characters: Merry, Pippin, Sam
Rating: ever so G

"Have you ever seen such a springtide?" Hefting his shovel, Merry fondly clapped Sam's shoulder.

"No one has! Not even the oldest gammer!" Pippin bounded over with a rattling wheelbarrow, even swifter on lengthened legs. "The apple-trees quite snowed us in with petals, and look, they're already bowed with setting fruit!"

"My Gaffer says, 'tis past all expectation." Sam nodded, cheeks only a little pinkened. "The Lady's to thank; her gift brought this about."

"Not to mention the sure hands of its wielder," Merry answered with a squeeze, and grinning Pippin gently elbowed Sam so that he smiled helplessly even as he blushed.

Oh, I love both of these.

Even bad guys want to have a nice life! And have a reason for ending up the way they are, if only in their own minds. But his love of hobbit fear tells us where he stands.

Nice to see Sam being appreciated and helped by the two warriors after the Shire has been cleansed and renewed. I suppose Frodo's mewed up in his study in Bag End :(

Just for you; a drabbloid, not a drabble

Frodo pushed the windows of the Mayor's Office a little further open. He then had to lunge for his desk, racing the spring breeze, placing ink-pots and mugs and stones on as many documents as he could catch, but in truth, he didn't mind. Not with this sweet breeze curling around him, laden with floral perfumes and birdsong. Not when today he was well enough to enjoy it.

So he smiled, even when three written recommendations for Fastolph Chubb escaped the desk, flitting up with the breeze then skittering to three different corners of the room.

ooh, that first one! Oh how well you write ruffians, my dear! :-) And I love your hobbits, too! :D

Damn... now I've got a ruffian plotbunny nosing my ankle.

I love the second one. It's always good when Sam gets his due.

Aw... Sam's so sweet. I liked it!

Oh, you don't know how happy this makes me. I didn't like to think of the grand flowering of the Shire going on all about, with Frodo unable to enjoy it - especially since he made it possible. A pain-free day for Frodo!

*hugs you*

[identity profile] danachan.livejournal.com 2007-05-08 12:32 am (UTC)(link)
*acts like this is for me too*

Pardon me while I emote in highpitched squee. Oh, this makes me so very happy - I shouldn't quote aprilkat, but she put it much better than I ever could. This is absolutely beautiful, Ruby.

So, for the moment? I'll sit here and smile with Frodo (and then get to commenting on the rest of your drabbles. *grin*)

[identity profile] danachan.livejournal.com 2007-05-08 12:35 am (UTC)(link)
The second one made me smile like you wouldn't believe. The Shire is blooming, and it makes my heart ache, but not at all badly. I wish I could breathe it in, too, see it myself: hopefully, it wouldn't make me sneeze. *lopsided grin*

The first one rather reminds me of another work I've read, though this of course is rather more compact. Still, that attitude, and seeing things from The Other Perspective... They do all have reasons for what they end up becoming, but that doesn't mean they still couldn't have chosen differently - that's what it's all about. The choices they, or we, make.

Anyhow, I liked both of these quite a lot.

I love your ruffian!! Both of the drabble are great. And also the Frodo for Aprilkat. It's so cool to have you writing about hobbits. (And I'm really glad you signed up for the remix!)

You are only the second person ever that I have seen writing ruffian pov. :D In both cases I approve strongly because it's just exactly the sort of thing there should be more of!

Re: the second one: SAM. Sammmmm. That's all. :D

Awww - The shire is a land of plenty for all comers - it's just that some can not stay there.

Both of them echo Frodo in different and clever ways (even if they aren't about him at all).

*grin* If I write a story like this, where some but not all of the Fab Four hobbits appear, I usually know where the others are and what they are doing. So when you said that I'd already thought of Frodo in the Mayor's office with the windows wide open. Thanks for giving me a chance to tell that story. :D

Because, yes, he deserves to enjoy it ever so much.

[identity profile] rubynye.livejournal.com 2007-05-10 01:07 am (UTC)(link)
Sweetie, whenever I write hobbits I write them in part for you. Unless it's in whole. :D

*squeezes you*

[identity profile] rubynye.livejournal.com 2007-05-10 01:23 am (UTC)(link)
You know me and the Troubles. I like a good Ruffianfic every so often. :D

[identity profile] rubynye.livejournal.com 2007-05-10 01:25 am (UTC)(link)
So did you write that Ruffianfic yet? *wink*

I think most of us love it when Sam gets his due. I couldn't resist giving him the chance.

[identity profile] rubynye.livejournal.com 2007-05-10 01:28 am (UTC)(link)
Yay Sam! *cheers*

[identity profile] rubynye.livejournal.com 2007-05-10 01:38 am (UTC)(link)
I *had* to write a Springtime drabble for that prompt, you know? It was required. :)

And yes, the first one does bear some relationship to a story I won't be posting. :D

*huggles you*

[identity profile] rubynye.livejournal.com 2007-05-10 01:42 am (UTC)(link)
*beam* Thank you, brighteyes. I'm glad I'm back to writing about hobbits again, and the people they interact with, willingly or not.

[identity profile] rubynye.livejournal.com 2007-05-10 01:50 am (UTC)(link)
I find myself thinking about how very few people *consider* themselves bad guys, but when you listen to them talk long enough, you can figure out the ones who are. So I find the POV of the bad guys interesting, and I'm really glad you, especially, think I did well by them. :D

Also, SAMMMMMMMMMM.

[identity profile] rubynye.livejournal.com 2007-05-10 01:53 am (UTC)(link)

*beam* You ake me feel like I can write. :D

Not yet. I'm still panicking over a smutty new avengers fic... the tv show, not the comic.

but the bunny hasn't run away yet!

Exactly, exactly. Few people tend to think of themselves as evil, and those who do turn out to be rather pathetic sometimes.
