"Today we are cancelling the apocalypse!"

Today [livejournal.com profile] azephirin kindly took me to see Pacific Rim, and I am now full of delight, even if for a moment.

There should be a name for the equivalent of the Bechdel test for people of color, where there's more than one POC who interact meaningfully. This movie doesn't pass Bechdel (I am going to be entertaining myself for awhile by mentally genderswapping most of the characters), but it does pass that test (although I wish they'd found a different name/callsign for the protagonist jaeger). It made just enough sense to be gripping, it was wildly entertaining, and, well, it was about GIANT ROBOTS FIGHTING GIANT MONSTERS.

I'm glad I saw it. And I'm glad I did something fun today.

PS. Idris Elba delivers the St. Crispin's Day Speech for this movie: "Today, at the edge of our hope, at the end of our time, we have chosen not only to believe in ourselves, but in each other. Today there's not a man or woman in here who shall stand alone. Today, we face the monsters that are at our door and take the fight to them! Today, we are canceling the apocalypse!"
